How to Start Planning Your Wedding

Many of my clients get overwhelmed when they begin the venue search because they don’t know which factors to prioritize first and how to get started. My suggestion is to move in the following order - it will simplify the process and make your life easier!

I. budget sets the direction

First decide on how much you’re comfortable spending. A lot of wedding websites will tell you to start with your guest list first - this is not ideal because it might push you to spend more than you want to, which no one should do. Your budget will directly tell you how many people you are able to invite. Having a limit on your guest count is helpful too - it will allow you to carefully select those who are most important to you, while keeping the wedding planning economical and within your comfort zone.

ii. create your must haves list

Jot down the items you cannot live without. does your vision include an outdoor ceremony? do you need an ADA friendly space with an elevator? create a short list of items that you don't want to sacrifice.

iii. decide on aesthetic

Are you looking for a rustic vibe, a clean and modern raw space, or a full service venue with lots of color and texture? Gather wedding photos that you love on pinterest and instagram to hone in on your aesthetic and better understand what you’re drawn to.

v. hire your planner!

Once you’ve gathered all of this info, you’re ready to hire your planner. deliver the vision and direction to her, and she will do the research to find your ideal wedding venue!

Hi there! I’m the founder and head architect behind Creative Process Collective, as well as owner and designer over at January Made Design.  You can guarantee I will greet you with an over the top smile and talk your ears off about all things creative, small business and probably pets (everyone loves pets). Serial over-sharer on social media, you’ll be able to find me most days sitting at my trestle table working away with a green tea and surrounded by too many house plants and most likely a cat stretched across my keyboard.
